In January I was researching environmentally friendly ways to dispose of expired car seats and came across a car seat disassembly video. It had never occurred to me to take them apart and recycle them and I thought it was brilliant, especially for those of us with municipal bulky plastics recycling.
A pipe dream I have is to open a car seat recycling center, but in the mean time I had to settle on an event.
I am really excited to bring you this video which represents hours and hours (and hours) of work. A huge shout out to Mark and Nella Goho, Jonathan and Laura Schwartz, David and Cheryl Johnson, Nathan and Lauren Herring (for moral support!) and my husband Jason who is the ultimate supporter of crazy ideas. Not everyone has friends that will spend two hours smashing car seats, or holding children so their husbands can smash car seats, on their behalf.
I hope you enjoy watching this as much as we enjoyed making it.
If you’d like to host your own car seat recycling event, be sure to check your local fire house for expired car seats. Also try to pick a day when you’re not recovering from the flu, it isn’t freezing outside, and remember your scissors, reciprocating saws and if you’re Jon, shin guards.
